WHO BEATS THE DRUM

In order to combat stereotypes and discrimination towards the homeless in Poland, the Pomeranian Forum in Aid of Getting Out of Homelessness created Werbel Demokracji (The Drum of Democracy). This initiative was supported by many private individuals as well as public figures, but mostly by those who are directly affected by homelessness. The idea was also supported by several companies, institutions and the media.

Werbel Demokracji was supported by the Non-Governmental Organisations Fund, with financial means coming from Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. It was approved by the authorities: the Pomeranian Governor – Roman Zaborowski, the Marshall of the Pomeranian Province – Jan Kozłowski, Mayors of Gdańsk – Paweł Adamowicz, Gdynia – Wojciech Szczurek, Sopot – Jacek Karnowski and Słupsk – Maciej Kobyliński. The campaign was also supported by the media: the press – Dziennik Bałtycki, television – TVP Gdańsk, radio – Radio Gdańsk, the Internet –Wirtualna Polska Web Portal, and displayed by AMS company.

The Pomeranian Forum in Aid of Getting Out of Homelessness is a cross-sector partnership of units dealing with homelessness, set up in order to create and support social policy system aimed at solving the problem of homelessness and alleviating its consequences. The partnership united different institutions dealing with the problem of homelessness and allowed their integration, cooperation and exchange of skills, knowledge and experience. It was established in 1997 so as to support, coordinate and consolidate the activities of NGOs and public sector institutions in the sphere of homelessness in the Pomeranian Province. Based on the Co-operation Agreement, the Pomeranian Forum unites civil, education and public sector institutions which treat supporting the homeless in getting out of homelessness at any stage of the process as their priority.

Focus Ireland, founded in 1985, is a non-government organisation which provides help to the homeless in 3 cities in Ireland: Dublin, Limerick and Waterford. It works directly with the homeless by providing streetwork services to young people, offering re-integrating activities and helping with finding a home. Focus Ireland also offers advice, advocacy and information and has considerable achievements in conducting campaigns against stereotypes and discrimination of the homeless, e.g. Everyone has a right to a place they can call home. The organisation offers factual support for the campaign.
